Neville Celebrates
MAN UTD 1 BASLE 1
Thursday, Mar 13, 2003

Gary Neville chose the perfect moment to break his Champions League duck as his long-range strike earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw with Basle.

With his depleted team trailing to Christian Gimenez's first-half opener, Neville let fly with a left-footed volley on 53 minutes after the Swiss side failed to clear a bouncing ball in the box.

A deflection off Thimothee Atouba saw the ball nestle in the corner of the net, much to Neville's stunned surprise.

MAN UTD 2 LEEDS 1
Friday, Mar 07, 2003

Mikael Silvestre salvaged Manchester United's title dream at Old Trafford as the hosts clinched a 2-1 win over Leeds.

Having lost their interval lead to Mark Viduka's 63rd minute header, United were left banging their heads against Leeds' defensive brick wall before Silvestre rose to meet David Beckham's inswinging free-kick to seal a dramatic late victory.

The win came at a cost, with Juan Sebastian Veron limping off and skipper Roy Keane completing the game as a makeshift centre-forward after picking up an injury as all three home substitutes had been used.

RUUD ROCKED BY FINAL DEFEAT
Wednesday, Mar 05, 2003

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been hit hard by Manchester United's failure in Sunday's Worthington Cup final.

The Dutch striker, who has yet to win a trophy with United since his £18m move from PSV Eindhoven two summers ago, says he has been in a morose mood since the 2-0 at the hands of Liverpool.

He even confessed to MUTV viewers that he is finding it hard to pick himself up ahead of Wednesday night's home game against Leeds United.

Van Nistelrooy said: "For me, Monday was hard and it was just a miserable feeling in my body about Sunday but I know there's still a lot to play for and that's always in my mind.

"It's hard, but you have to look forward. To lose a final against Liverpool is always bad.

"On Wednesday, we have to show what we are about but after Sunday we need a few days to be ready for that.

"Personally I think it's hard for me to say all the positive things that are ahead. That is what you want, but you feel bad. You don't feel very positive and it is hard to look ahead but it may be better by Wednesday."

LIVERPOOL BEAT UNITED IN CUP FINAL
Monday, Mar 03, 2003

Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen put Liverpool into seventh heaven in Cardiff as they clinched the Worthington Cup 2-0 against bitter rivals Manchester United.

Gerrard's deflected effort put the Anfield outfit in front six minutes before the interval and they looked like repelling United's second-half onslaught anyway before Owen strode forward to slide home the clincher late on.

But the real hero was keeper Jerzy Dudek, who made up for his aberration which gifted Manchester United victory in the Barclaycard Premiership meeting between the bitter north-west rivals earlier in the season.

RUUD AND GIGGS SEND UNITED THROUGH
Wednesday, Feb 26, 2003

Substitute Ryan Giggs has fired Manchester United into the Champions League quarter-finals after scoring twice in an emphatic 3-0 victory over Juventus in Group D of the second phase.

Giggs, linked with a move to Inter Milan by the Italian press on Tuesday, replaced injured Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan after eight minutes and steered home Juan Sebastian Veron's square pass from close range in the 15th minute at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The Welshman followed up with a stunning second just before the break, setting off on a solo run from the halfway line, before being substituted in the 49th minute with a thigh injury by Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who tapped in the third.

The victory, against a Juventus side who had not conceded a goal at home in the Champions League in more than a year but whose defending on Tuesday was sloppy, brought up United's fourth win in as many second phase games.

In a hectic first half, Juventus defender Ciro Ferrara hit the post and French striker David Trezeguet had a penalty appeal turned down before sending a powerful header against the crossbar, while United's Nicky Butt also found the woodwork.

The Italian champions, whose scratch team were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford last week, also had plenty of possession in the second half but continued a pattern of poor finishing up front and defensive blunders at the back.
