Two sets of Red Devils XI played in Manchester United's 5-1 win over Scottish outfit Clyde as Sir Alex Ferguson and his squad kicked off their pre-season preparations.
A brace from Ruud van Nistelrooy and goals from Kleberson, Liam Miller and Paul Scholes sealed the victory despite Clyde finding the back of the net through Neil McGregor.
Amongst the teams were Park Ji Sung making his first appearance in a United jersey and a number of youngsters including Phil Bardsley and Gerard Pique.
Boos and chants of abuse directed at Rio Ferdinand by the Red Devils faithful marred the game due to his reluctance to sign a new contract.
United went into the break 1-0 up through Kleberson but Paul Scholes and a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty won the game early in the second half.
Neil McGregor did net a consolation goal but van Nistelrooy and Liam Miller made 5-1 the final score.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is determined to blot out the most frustrating season of his Manchester United career by leading the Red Devils back to glory.
Despite speculation about the Dutchman's future, van Nistelrooy is still at United and in Sir Alex Ferguson's squad for Saturday's first pre-season friendly at Clyde.
Although there are still four weeks to go before the Old Trafford club launch their Premiership campaign at Everton, van Nistelrooy is already looking ahead to the season with relish.
His attitude is not surprising given the injury nightmare he endured last term, with hernia, Achilles and ankle problems restricting the 29-year-old to just 27 appearances.
The former PSV Eindhoven player still managed to find the net 16 times and finish top of the Champions League goalscoring charts, although his tally was well down on the 110 efforts he converted in his first three incredible seasons with United.
However, after coming through last season's FA Cup final and a summer World Cup qualifier with Holland unscathed and also enjoying a decent build-up to the new campaign, van Nistelrooy is hoping his injury nightmare in now at an end.
"It is a new season and it feels like a new start," he told MUTV.
"You can't have a good campaign if you are not fit, so the most important thing for me now is to get into a rhythm by playing lots of games.
"There is no doubt last year was the most frustrating of my time at United, you only have to look back at my previous three seasons to see how easy that is to say.
"It was hard but now I want to take the opportunity to do well again."
United follow up their trip to Scotland with a visit to Peterborough on Tuesday for Barry Fry's testimonial.
After that it is off to Hong Kong for the start of their four-match Far East tour before returning home to complete the pre-season schedule against Royal Antwerp on August 3, seven days before a vital Champions League qualifier.
It will be another fortnight before van Nistelrooy and his team-mates learn their opponents but, after two successive last-16 exits and largely disappointing Premiership campaigns, he believes the memory of recent setbacks will be a major factor in avoiding such a situation again.
"There is no doubt last season was disappointing," he said.
"It is something we do not want to forget because can use it as a motivation for this season.
"Inside every player is the desire to prove to others we are still amongst the best."
Ruud Van Nistelrooy is a target for AC Milan - should they fail to keep hold of Hernan Crespo, according to a newspaper report.
The Guardian claims that the Italian giants are looking to bring Van Nistelrooy in to bolster their forward line.
Milan are trying to secure an further loan deal for Chelsea's Hernan Crespo, but newspaper reports suggest he could be recalled by Chelsea this week.
But with Milan's other target - Parma's Alberto Gilardino - being priced out of their range, a move for United's striker is on the cards, the paper claims.
An offer of £10m and Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson would be on the table in exchange for Van Nistelrooy, the article adds.
Ruud van Nistelrooy helped to keep Holland top of qualifying Group One with the goal that set the Dutch up for a comprehensive victory over Finland.
Van Nistelrooy beat keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen in the 35th minute before Dirk Kuijt (77) Philip Cocu (85) and Robin van Persie (87) wrapped up the three points that keep the Czech Republic in second place in the group.
Holland now have 22 points from eight games, one of ahead of the Czechs who beat Macedonia 6-1 earlier in the evening.
Finland started the game confidently and Holland looked as though they could be in for a tough night.
The outlook for Marco van Basten's side looked particularly shaky after Theo Lucius suffered a suspected broken leg early in the first half.
The PSV Eindhoven midfielder was replaced by Mario Melchiot in the 27th minute as Van Basten was forced to re-shuffle his side in the face of several dangerous attacks from the home side.
And it was against the run of play that the visitors took the lead.
However, in typically clinical fashion Van Nistelrooy smashed a shot high into the Finnish net after receiving a long ball into the penalty area to put Holland ahead.
Finland stayed in the game, but failed to capitalise on some good possession until the complexion of the match changed completely with the introduction of Van Persie late in the second half.
The game had been evenly poised with Finland pushing for an equaliser, but the Arsenal forward, a 74th minute substitute for Van Nistelrooy, immediately combined with Arjen Robben to set up Feyenoord forward Kuijt for Holland's second.
Van Persie then played in Cocu, who recovered from a knee injury to join the squad last week, for a third, before claiming the fourth for himself.
The precocious 21-year-old added to his debut goal against Romania at the weekend by completing the rout with his second goal in as many international appearances to give Holland a flattering scoreline that keeps the Czech Republic at bay.
RUUD van Nistelrooy insists he is not quitting United – despite one of his worst-ever seasons.
Van Nistelrooy has been linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid after reportedly becoming fed up with life in Manchester.
But the Dutch star, who plays for his country against Romania in a World Cup qualifier in Rotterdam on Saturday night, is adamant he will be at Old Trafford next season.
“There is no question, I want to stay at United,” he said. “I’m committed to United and that is where I want to be, and where I will be. It’s the most important thing for me.”
Van Nistelrooy’s campaign was ruined by an Achilles injury which kept him out for three months.
He scored only six goals in the Premiership and believes he was rushed back too soon to play in the Champions League when United lost to AC Milan in the knockout phase.
“For me it has been a season of injuries,” he said. “I only played 27 games but I scored 16 goals and if you look at it that it is not too bad.
“Overall, it wasn’t my best season and everyone knows that – I know that myself. I was in the best form of my life but I was rushed back too quickly and now I am struggling and it is a bit of a disappointment.
“The injuries spoilt my season because I had top games in the Champions League and against Arsenal in the FA Cup, but I couldn’t give what I usually can.
“After we play Finland on Wednesday I have two weeks off, but it is not enough. The calendar is so full it is getting ridiculous and it is not good for players to keep their quality.
“At clubs like United you are pushed to do an impossible number of games and for a player It is becoming physically impossible without rest.”
