Sevilla 2 - 1 Real Madrid
Friday, November 15, 2006
Sevilla move back into second place following their home victory against fellow title contenders Real Madrid in last night's televised game.
They failed to overhaul Barcelona, however, who remain top after struggling to beat lowly Real Sociedad 1-0 at home with a goal sixteen minutes from time from Ronaldinho.
At the Sánchez Pizjuan, Sevilla had to fight back after going a goal behind in the first quarter of an hour. David Beckham, making a rare start this season, beat the keeper with a free-kick from the left, which may have been intended as a cross.
No matter, Fredi Kanoute soon levelled matters with his 11th goal of the campaign, reacting first to pick up the pieces after Fabiano's drive cannoned back into play from the crossbar.
As the game progressed both sides created enough chances to seal the points -David Beckham almost doubled his tally midway through the second-half with a speculative long-range effort that went narrowly wide, being the pick of the visitors'- but it was substitute Ernesto Chevanton's acrobatic scissors kick from a deflected free-kick that finally won the day for the UEFA Cup holders with just over ten minutes left on the clock.
