Real out of King's Cup
Saturday, January 20, 2007
REAL Madrid were dumped out of the King's Cup by Primera Liga strugglers Real Betis on the away goals rule after they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.
Real got off to a flying start when Brazilian forward Robinho gave them the lead with a deflected shot after just five minutes, Reuters said.
But they failed to press home their advantage and Betis equalised before the break when striker Dani headed in at the far post after some good work from Francisco Maldonado.
Without the out-of-favour David Beckham, Ronaldo and Antonio Cassano left out of the squad by coach Fabio Capello, Real lacked the firepower up front to breach the Betis defence again.
Betis, who won the Cup in 2005, join Barcelona, Sevilla, Osasuna, Deportivo Coruna, last year's finalists Real Zaragoza, Getafe and second division Valladolid in the hat for today's draw.
