Ruud's brace lifts Real
Thursday, May 03, 2007
Real Madrid kept up their late title surge with an impressive 1-4 away victory against relegation strugglers, Athletic Bilbao.
David Beckham supplied the cross that led to the 14th minute opener, a dangerous in-swinging free-kick headed home by Sergio Ramos at the far post.
Ruud van Nistelrooy made it two with his first of the night in the 35th minute when he got his head on the end of Cicinho's cross after a neat exchange of passes with Emerson down the right flank.
The Dutch international notched his 18th Liga goal of the season five minutes into the second half with an unstoppable right-foot volley from the edge of the area that flew into the top of Exposito's net.
Fernando Llorente struck back ten minutes from time with a glancing far post header from Yeste's free-kick, but Guti crushed any hopes of a miracle in the 83rd minute when he dinked the ball over the unrushing Exposito after being released by Raśl from midfield to restore Real's three-goal lead.
The only sour note for Fabio Capello was the second half booking for David Beckham that means he will miss next weekend's crucial top of the table clash with second-placed Sevilla at the Bernabeu.
