Late win keeps Real on top
Monday, October 01, 2007
A 1-0 win away to Getafe on Sunday kept Real Madrid at the top of the Spanish "Liga". Real again left it late, with defender Sergio Ramos scoring in the 65th minute.
Their first ever league win in Getafe leaves Real with 16 points from six games, one point more than Villarreal - who beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 earlier on Sunday - and two points more than Barcelona, who on Saturday thrashed bottom team Levante 4-1.
The same as against Betis on Wednesday, Real did not play well and were lucky not to go behind. Getafe striker Manu del Moral hit the Real post in the 18th minute, then squandered several other good chances.
In the 65th minute Arjen Robben skilfully sliced open the Getafe defence and set up Ramos to score with his left foot from close range.
In the 79th minute Real substitute Julio Baptista hit the post after being set up by Robben.
Getafe continued to attack and deserved to snatch a draw at the end. In the 89th minute a header from Argentine defender Cata Diaz hit the Real crossbar.
