New contract for Ruud
Friday, November 02, 2007
Real Madrid are moving swiftly to tie Ruud van Nistelrooy down to an improved deal, aware that he can leave for free in the summer.
Though he has an additional 12 months as an option, he will be free to leave on July 1 2008 if that is not exercised, something that the Merengue bosses are worried about.
They have learnt their lessons from the way David Beckham left them for free to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy, and do not want a repeat of the disaster, particularly with their main goal-scorer.
He will be 32 next year, and the idea is to tie the Dutchman down for at least one more season.
He has been offered a contract until June 2009, with an option for another year.
However, the striker wants a concrete two year extension, so he can retire at the Bernabeu in 2010.
Should the negotiations fail to reach a conclusion over the next two months, the reigning 'Pichichi' will be free to sign a pre-contract with the club of his choice on January 1.
