Ruud hits 60 goal mark
Wednesday, October 01, 2008
Real Madrid’s Dutch goal machine Ruud van Nistelrooy has continued his impressive scoring ratio this season after netting his side’s winning goal against Real Betis last Saturday.
That precious injury time goal earned all three points for Los Merengues but it also maintained van Nistelrooy’s near flawless start to the season in terms of his scoring ratio.
The 32 year old has now netted in six of Madrid’s first seven games in all competitions (including the two-legged Supercopa) and tallying seven goals in total.
The only fixtures where he has failed to find the back of the net, ironically, was against La Liga’s two newly promoted sides. He played for over 60 minutes against Numancia but could not get on the scoresheet while he was rested completely against Sporting Gijón a week ago. Even more ironic, ofcourse, is that Madrid scored a total of 11 goals in those two outings alone.
But his strike against Real Betis at the weekend brings his overall haul to 60 goals in just under 90 competitive matches as he enters his third season in the famous white shirt. It’s an average of 0.69 goals per game, a percentage that very few strikers are able to achieve.
He will be looking to extend his streak when Los Blancos take on Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday in the Champions League.
